Food and Farming question from Mike Tyers

At the Future of Local Food and Farming debate that took place at Newent Community School on 3 April 2009, Mike Tyers submitted the following question:

If carbon embedding becomes used as a measure of the environmental impact (of food), it would probably result in intensification (of food production?), the introduction of GM, etc.  Would society be prepared to sacrifice some of the purchasing criteria, such as perceived animal welfare, in favour of the environment?
(We ran out of time before this question could be put to the panel.)
